Willmar WarHawks Defeat New Ulm Steel 5-2

Nov 21, 2022

The Willmar WarHawks had just one game this past weekend and earned a 5-2 win over the New Ulm Steel.  Mike Sweetland started the scoring for the WarHawks at the 10:36 mark of the 1st period with his team leading 7th goal of the season.  New Ulm answered back just over 2 minutes later and it was tied at 1 after 1 period.  In the 2nd period, Denys Hocharenko scored his first goal as a Warhawk in his first game to get a 2-1 lead 3:14 into the 2nd.  New Ulm answered back again and tied it at 2 just over the midway point of the 2nd period.

The game started to get a little physical as both the Steel and WarHawks traded some roughing calls but neither team could take advantage on special teams and it stayed tied at 2 after 2.  The WarHawks then took over in the 3rd period.  Luke McCarthy got the go ahead and eventual game winner 3:23 into the 3rd.  Christian Kankelfritz then took a turnover and beat the goaltender for his first junior hockey goal.  Sam Holm got his first junior hockey goal next to round out the scoring for the WarHawks.  Zach Ortolano made 31 saves for the win and is now 2-1 with the WarHawks.

The WarHawks have now won 4 of their last 5 games and have a big week coming up.  The WarHawks are on the road Wednesday night to play Alexandria then a home series against the Mason City Toros on Friday and Saturday.  Both home games are sponsored by American Family Insurance agents in Willmar and there will be give aways before and during the games.
