WILLMAR — In a two-game series against the Peoria Mustangs, the Willmar WarHawks earned a split over the weekend at the Willmar Civic Center.

On Saturday, the WarHawks raced ahead to a 4-0 advantage before holding on in the final period for a 4-3 win.

Less than 12 hours later, the two teams returned to the ice on Sunday, when Mustangs notched four goals in first and third periods to capture a 8-4 triumph.

In their victory, the WarHawks broke out to a 3-0 lead in the first period when forward Marquez Ginger, Tony Brings and Jake Santarelli each put the puck in the back of the net.

Midway through the next period, Santarelli collected his second goal of the game before the visitors responded when George Giese put them on the scoreboard. Peoria got scores from Austin Keil and Connor Bennett, but Luke Weberg fought off the rally. The Willmar goaltender picked up 37 saves to pick up the win.

Entering the final 20 minutes of action on Sunday, Willmar only trailed 4-2 after second-period goals from Brings and forward Josh Hoffman. However, the hosts would not get closer.

Next, the WarHawks will travel to Blaine to take on the Missoula Junior Bruins at 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
