WARHAWKS SKATE TO A WEEKEND SPLIT

Jan 30, 2023

The Willmar WarHawks split the weekend games.  Friday night a tough 8-2 loss to the Granite City Lumberjacks.  The game started out well as Tyler Misialek scored his 11th of the season 15 seconds into the game, then Mike Sweetland netted his 12th of the season 45 seconds in and it was an early 2-0 lead.  The WarHawks were able to stave off a hard charge from Granite but Mike D’Orazio kept the score 2-0 after one period of play.  The rest of the game would be controlled by Granite City.  They scored 5 in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd for an 8-2 win.

Saturday night the WarHawks took a trip north to play the Minnesota Loons.  The game didn’t start well on the scoreboard for the WarHawks as they let in a pair of first period goals and it was 2-0 through one period.  The WarHawks would then score 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd including a goal from Blaise Schutt and a pair of power play goals Luke McCarthy for a 4-2 lead.  Goals would go back and forth as the Loons answered back, the Jake Hosszu got his 2nd of the season, the Loons anded the scoring in the 2nd but the WarHawks led 5-4 after two periods.  The Loons took advantage of a power play early in the 3rd then scored an even strength goal shortly after to tale a 6-5 lead.  The WarHawks then put another run of 4 unanswered goals started by Hudson Zinda scoring his first goal as a WarHawk, Gunna Sibley got his 12th on the power play, Mike Sweetland his 13th and Sam Holm with an empty net goal to wrap up the scoring in a 9-6 win.  For Sweetland, his goal puts him now one away from tying the franchise record for career goals and 10 points away from tying the career points record, both currently held by Brandon Holt.

The WarHawks are on the road this weekend as they play at Alexandria Friday night and at Mason City Saturday afternoon.  The next WarHawks home game is Saturday February 11th when they host Granite City.  That game will be sponsored by Lakeland Broadcasting and will also be Diamond Edge Figure Skating Night.  Get your tickets at willmarwarhawks.com.
