Last week was a roller coaster of emotions for the WarHawks, beating the #2 Blizzard on Wednesday before losing the next two games. Wednesday night, the boys made their way to Alexandria to take on the Blizzard for the 4th time this season. The last three meetings the Blizzard were able to beat the WarHawks by an average of 4 goals. But this is the West division and you never know what will happen. The first period was scoreless even though both teams had a man advantage 3 times a piece. Both teams’ PK was perfect. The 2nd period seemed to be headed in the same direction until Gabe Adams (9)(Callaghan 10, Hinze 15) got a pass from behind the net and scored from the slot to get the boys on the board. Soon after the goal, the Blizzard were able to take the lead and score twice within a few minutes. Then Timothy Vaculik (10)(Callaghan 11) jumped on the ice, keeping the puck in the offensive zone and scoring from the top of the circle to tie the game up. Third period was similar to the first with no goals and a few penalties. Both teams gained 1 point as we headed to overtime. The Blizzard had a man advantage going into OT because of a penalty on the WarHawks late in the third. Alexandria made a zone entry and set up a beautiful play that luckily, Girard was able to stop popping the puck up into the air and right to Wendorff who fed a break away pass to Jett Wheeler (3)(Wendorff 5) who beat the Blizzard tendy 1 hole for an exciting finish 41 seconds into overtime.
Friday night the WarHawks were scoreless until the 2nd period when Zane Irion (7)(Callaghan 12, Harrigan 1) made a zone entry with Callaghan and scored off his back hand. The boys made a late push to come within 1 goal with Aidan Callaghan (7)(Adams 5, Woltman 6) and Nathan Hinze (4)(Adams 6, Branco 1) goals. The Blizzard enacted their revenge from Wednesday with 2 empty netters to finish the game.
Saturday night the game seemed well in the hands of the WarHawks with 2 goals scored within 3 minutes of each other against the Wilderness. Aidan Callaghan (8)(Nathan Hinze 16, Kilgore 1) and Nathan Hinze (5)(Adams 7) scored in the first period. Unfortunately, the boys weren’t able to find the back of the net for the rest of the night, losing 5-2.
The WarHawks are on home ice Friday and Saturday night against the Mason City Toros for their last home games of December. Let’s pack the rink!
