This weekend was packed with exciting hockey. The boys took on the Mason City Toros Friday night to kick off the weekend. Even though the score doesn’t reflect it, the game was never out of the WarHawks control. Aidan Callaghan (2)(Hinze 10, Wanka 4) started us off with a goal halfway through the first period. The Toros got two penalties at the end of the 2nd and Kaiden Jackson (1)(Irion 3, Wanka 5) scored his first goal as a WarHawk during an exciting 5 on 3. Carson Wendorff (3)(Woltman 2, K. Jackson 1) got the game winning goal early in the 2nd period.
Saturday night was Veteran appreciation night and the boys debuted their military jerseys in front of a huge crowd. Nathan Hinze (6)(Wanka 6, Callaghan 6) scored the only goal of the game with 16 seconds left in the 1st. Gabe Adams (3)(Woltman 3, Wendorff 2) was able to find the back of the net 7 minutes into the 2nd period for the only other goal that the WarHawks were able to score.
For their first 3 game weekend, the boys drove down to Iowa on Sunday to take on the Toros for the 2nd time in 3 days. The 1st period was a lot of back and forth with an even shot count of 13 for the WarHawks and 11 for the Toros. To everyone’s surprise, the Toros were able to score twice in the last 2 minutes of the period. Mason Wanka (9)(Hinze 11, Callaghan 8) got the team on the board in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd. After a high sticking by one of the Toros players, the WarHawks went on a 4 minute power play. The boys were able to beat the net minder twice with Gabriel Adams (8)(Woltman 4, Callaghan 8) getting the first goal and then 47 seconds later Mason Wanka (10)(Irion 4, M. Jackson 3) got the 3rd goal of the night. Toros tied it up with less than 2 minutes left and we went to overtime. With only 44 seconds left, Wanka fed Carson Wendorff (4)(Wanka (7) with a beautiful pass below the blue line and Wendorff scored, winning the game!
