Dec 11, 2023

WILLMAR OUTSCORE OPPONENTS 12 TO 2

The WarHawks had 2 games in 3 days over the weekend beginning Friday night up in Breezy Point vs the Loons. Willmar did not wait long before one of their newest addition Dome Szabo scored a goal just 2:18 into the 1st period. About 2 minutes later, Scott Woltman scored his 6th of the season wrapping up the scoring in the 1st period. With the 2-0 lead, WarHawks cranked it up further with a PowerPlay goal from Luke McCarthy who made his return back to the team last week. Hudson Zinda scoring next, also on the PowerPlay. When Willmar found themselves on the Penalty Kill late in the 2nd period, Luke McCarthy put in a shorthanded goal and his 2nd of the game. Entering the 3rd Willmar had a 5-0 lead but that didn’t stop them from continuing the pressure. 3:48 into the 3rd Hudson Zinda scored his 2nd of the game on a 2 on 1 getting a pass from Luke McCarthy. Tootoo Fotheringham made it 7-0 with his 1st goal of the season. Scoring finished with a Sam Holm goal. Concluding the game 8-0 where the WarHawks outshot the Loons 66-23. Jesse Easterwood with the shutout in net saving all 23 shots including a penalty shot.

WarHawks with the rare Saturday off, enjoyed the rest but knew it was right back to battle as they hit the road early Sunday morning for a 2:10PM puck drop in Mason City to face the Toros. As usual it was a tight game with no goals from ether side until the Toros began the scoring 3:52 into the 2nd period. Willmar answered back with 2 goals later in the period both from Tyler Misialek. WarHawks had the 2-1 lead but Toros scored to tie the game at 2, 5:06 into 3rd period. With a continued back and forth between the teams fighting to get that 3rd goal. It was Willmar’s Tyler Misialek scoring his 3rd of the game to not only to complete the hat trick but also to break the tie. Toros took some chances offensively, Willmar’s goalie Kai Girard making some big saves before getting an assist on the final goal of the game scored by Luke McCarthy.

The WarHawks completed their first sweep of the year and feel they have momentum heading into their game at the Willmar where they will host the Minnesota Loons. This Friday’s home game is also Teddy Bear toss night where fans are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to toss onto the ice after WarHawks score their 1st goal of the game. Those stuffed animals will be donated to the Salvation Army.
