Friday night the Hawks came to play, beating the #2 team in the West Division for the second time in two weeks. The boys showed up to the Runestone expecting to see a team that wanted revenge for the shut out the WarHawks had given them the last time they played. The first half of the 1st period had that feeling with the Blizzard striking first. Apparently, that goal didn’t sit well with Gabriel Adams (14)(Vaculik 8, Montgomery 9) who scored short side off a rebound from Montgomery with 5:20 left in the 1st.
Blizzard were able to get the lead again 8 minutes into the 2nd period. Don’t worry, Adain Callaghan (17)(Wanka 14, Vaculik 9) he didn’t want them to have the lead for long. 40 seconds after the Blizzard goal, Vaculik threw the puck up high out of the defensive zone that landed on Wanka’s stick. Hawks had a 2 v 1 zone entry and Wanka waited out the one defenseman with precision and gave Callaghan a pass for a backdoor goal. The score stayed tied for the rest period.
3rd period was relatively uneventful with no goals or penalties for either team for 10 minutes. That is until Scott Wolrman (9)(Irion 11, Wendorff 11) got a pass in the slot from Irion and ripped one that snuck under the Blizzard tendy’s arm. The WarHawks had their first lead of the night and it stayed that way. 6 minutes left in the game, Wanka found Aidan Callaghan (18)(Wanka 15) for a breakaway. With 2 Blizzard defenseman chasing, Callaghan decided to shoot above the hash marks and that decision paid off, scoring one hole. Turns out Aidan Callaghan (19) wasn’t done scoring for the night. He found himself, with the puck on his stick, deep in his own defensive zone by the half wall. Knowing the Blizzard had pulled their goalie, he split the defense with a shot that landed safely in the back of the opposing team’s net. The hat trick was complete and so was Alexandria’s night. Boys won 5-2 solidifying their 4th place in the West Division.
The boys have two home games this weekend on Friday and Saturday night. Saturday is Youth Hockey Night and all kids wearing their association or rec jersey get in free with a paid adult!
