Third Period Penalties Cost Willmar In Breezy Point

Willmar WarHawks traveled north to Breezy Point for their NA3HL season opener on Friday night, but came up short on the scoreboard losing 5-3. It was the second victory of the season for the North Stars who enjoyed the atmosphere of the home crowd.

WarHawksHelmetA slow start had the WarHawks looking at a 2-0 deficit at the 16:45 mark of the opening period, but a last minute goal scored by Jacob Dobberstein gave Willmar momentum going into the locker room.

Two goals from Kane Tourumi and some solid goaltending by Elliot Gerth gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage at second intermission.

Third period penalties would be the demise of the WarHawks as Breezy Point would finally capitalize on the advantage to take the lead at 17:54. A second major penalty against Willmar was whistled in the final minute and the North Stars scored another to secure the win.

A total of 52 minutes of penalties were issued to the WarHawks in the game, while Breezy Point totaled just 10 minutes.

Willmar continue their two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Rochester to take on the Ice Hawks. Game time at the Rochester Rec Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
